Local Area

From Meifod village there are tranquil walks along the River Vyrnwy or away from the broad Meifod valley you can head off into the rolling hills. There are many quiet lanes around the locality which are ideal for cycling.

There is excellent fly fishing on the River Vyrnwy and Banwy in season and some people use the River Vyrnwy for wild swimming during the summer. The village also has community tennis courts and day, week or annual ticket can be obtained at a low cost from the post office/village shop. Along with the post office/village shop, Meifod also has a pub which serves excellent food, church, chapel and the COBRA rugby club.

Not far from the village there are the castles or Powis, Montgomery and Dolforwyn. There are also 2 steam railways locally, the Welshpool to Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway and the Cambrian Heritage Steam Railway based in Oswestry and Llynclys.

Llanymynech rocks provides challenging rock climbing or alternatively after a not too strenuous a walk fantastic views of the Shropshire plain, and as the area is a nature reserve on a limestone escarpment, birds such peregrine falcons can be seen and there is a fabulous display of orchids at the right time of year. Adjoining the rocks is the Llanymynech limeworks heritage area including the unusual Hoffman Limekiln (remember to take a torch).

Lake Vyrnwy, with its many trails and its RSPB reserve is not too far away. As it the Montgomery Canal which runs from Newtown, through Berriew, Welshpool, Arddleen, Llanymynech until it joins the Llangollen Canal.

Meifod makes an ideal base for visiting Snowdonia or the welsh boarders being within easy distance of Dolgellau, Llangollen, Shrewsbury, Wrexham and the welsh coast at Aberdyfi.
